Speeches and Toasts
Speakers at wedding receptions fall into two categories, those who actually enjoy standing up to address the guests and those who have sleepless nights at the very prospect. Whichever category you fall into, the most important thing to remember is that all those assembled at the reception are on your side. They will expect you to be amusing, entertaining, warm and to say pleasant things about the happy couple. Perhaps this is the most essential quality of a public speaker, to be human. Your audience will forgive your nerves, your fluffed lines and your hesitancy, but they will not take too kindly to a speaker who is convinced he is destined for the debating chamber of the House of Commons.
|
Below are some very simple rules for would-be speakers.
Always prepare what you are going to say because the mind has an unfortunate habit of going completely blank as you get to your feet. If necessary write your speech down, and try to begin with an amusing comment. Keep your speech as light as possible – your audience will want to be entertained, amused and to have a good laugh. If you do wish to make a few serious comments, say them in the middle of the speech, enabling you to end in a lighter vein. If you must poke fun at the happy couple or some of the guests, make sure beforehand that your comments will not offend anybody, especially the person you are referring to.
A speech at the reception should not last more than five minutes. If it does, make sure you have acquired the services of the country’s top scriptwriters, otherwise you run the risk of boring those assembled!
The following is the usual order of proceedings
- The Bride and Bridegroom cut the cake
- Toast to “The Bride and Bridegroom” This is normally proposed by the Brides father or a close relative or friend of the family.
- Toast to “The Bridesmaids” This is always proposed by the Bridegroom following the response to the first toast
- The Best Man would then respond to the Bridegrooms speech on behalf of the Bridesmaids. He would also read some of the comments in cards or telegrams.
Your event manager on the day is also available to be your master of ceremonies should you wish for a more informal and relaxed atmosphere. |
